The stories about cultures and traditions rooted in the regional historical background and climates are designated as Japan Heritage by The Agency for Cultural Affairs to revitalize regions by collecting, utilizing and disseminating inherited tangible and intangible cultural properties in a comprehensive manner. A total of 32 properties have been designated as the components of "A Historical Walk through 800 Years of Japanese Tea" ― Yamashiro Region, Kyoto Prefecture, such as the 28 historical sites across the 12 cities, towns and villages in Yamashiro Region, "Uji Tea Hand-rolling Processing Technique," (「宇治茶手もみ製茶技術」) and "Meisui Kumiage-no-Gi" (The ceremony of drawing water from the river to make tea), "Chatsubo Kuchikiri-no-Gi" (「茶壷口切の儀」) (The ceremony of opening new tea vase to commemorate the achievements of the three primogenitors of tea ceremony: Yousai Zenshi, Sen no Rikyū and Myōe and praying for further deployment of Uji Tea) and "Chasenzuka Kuyo-no-Gi" (「茶筅塚供養の儀」) (The memorial service of worn-out stirrers) during "Uji Tea Festival" held every October.
